Keep your home safe this holiday season

As
Thanksgiving approaches, the holiday season begins. Your schedule will start
filling up with gatherings to host or attend, gifts to buy, and trips to visit
family and relatives and celebrate. In all the fun and preparations, it is easy
to become careless with your home security.
Typically, there is a spike in crime during the holiday season as more people
are out of town, leaving their homes vacant and full of gifts and valuables.
Here are some tips from our locksmith experts to keep your family and valuables
secure this holiday season.

IF YOU PLAN TO
BE OUT OF TOWN FOR HOLIDAYS

Over 38 million people travel during the Thanksgiving to New Year’s period. You
will want to be sure to take extra precautions to deter burglars from targeting
your home and stealing your valuables.

Lock up any
items of value in a home safe.

Use and indoor
and outdoor timer for your lights. A timer will automatically turn your lights
on at the time you would normally be home and turn them off again when you
would normally be going to bed. The appearance that someone is home can be a
deterrent to burglars.

Ask a
neighbor, friend or family member to watch and check on your home while you are
away. Make sure they have your cellphone number so they can they can tell you
about anything suspicious or call the police and report it.

Be sure to put
in a Hold order at the Post office, so mail and newspapers won’t arrive and
pile up while you are away. A big pile-up of mail and newspapers in the
driveway is just an invitation to thieves.

Before you
Leave town, have a locksmith check your door locks. If you have not already
done so, upgrade your door security and install deadbolts or keypad locks.

IF YOU ARE
STAYING IN TOWN FOR HOLIDAY

The holidays are not a good time to become lax in your home security measures.

Be sure to
Always lock doors and windows, even if you plan to be gone just a short while.

Make sure that
Holiday gifts are not visible through windows and doors. No need to attract
undue attention from burglars.
